Yokosuka is a naval port on Tokyo Bay, about 50–75 minutes from Shinagawa by Keikyu or JR. Its sights are small and close together: a preserved battleship, a sailor bar strip, a fortress island reached by ferry, and a seaside park. Most travellers see it as a half or full day out of Yokohama or Kamakura; the Honch bar district is the reason to stay one night.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: Yokosuka-Chuo station to Dobuita Street and Verny Park is 10–15 minutes on foot. Local buses link the two stations and the coast (¥170–300); taxis start at ¥710 for the first 2 km. Keikyu and JR lines run along the coast to Kurihama and on to Kamakura and Yokohama.

Watch out

Safety

A safe port city with a working naval base and a busy bar strip. The real risks are the summer heat, the last Sarushima ferry, and Honch bars with no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
  • The naval base is closed to the public except on rare event days: do not plan around getting inside.
  • Sarushima closes in the evening and has no night staff; the last ferry leaves around 17:00 in Mar–Oct and 16:00 in Nov–Feb.
  • Some Honch bars are regulars-only or have no posted prices: ask the total before you sit.
  • On JR Yokosuka-bound trains the front four cars are removed at Zushi: sit in the rear cars that continue to Yokosuka or Kurihama.
