Sawai Madhopur is a rail junction of about 125,000 people in eastern Rajasthan, founded in 1763 and named after Sawai Madho Singh I. Almost nobody comes for the town: Ranthambore fort and tiger reserve sit 11 km away, and the town exists as the bed, station and permit desk for it. Two nights covers one safari plus a buffer; three if you want two drives at different times of day.

Getting around
The town itself is walkable. Everything else needs wheels: auto-rickshaw or a hired car to Ranthambhore Road and the park gates, 11–12 km. Hotels and safari operators run jeep pickups for booked drives. Trains are the sane way in and out; the bus from Jaipur takes about 6 h and is slower and less comfortable than the 2 h train.

- Safari permits are limited and sold per zone and per time slot; book on the official Rajasthan forest portal, not through a tout at the station.
- Only the forest department's registered jeeps and canters enter the park — refuse any 'private' safari.
- Park is closed to visitors during the monsoon, roughly July to September: check the official dates before booking.
- Tiger sightings are not guaranteed; a zone 1–5 permit and a full-day slot improve odds but do not promise anything.
- Ranthambore Fort has long flights of steps and monkeys that grab food and bags — keep nothing loose.
