Sawai Madhopur is a rail junction of about 125,000 people in eastern Rajasthan, founded in 1763 and named after Sawai Madho Singh I. Almost nobody comes for the town: Ranthambore fort and tiger reserve sit 11 km away, and the town exists as the bed, station and permit desk for it. Two nights covers one safari plus a buffer; three if you want two drives at different times of day.

- Only the forest department's registered jeeps and canters enter the park — refuse any 'private' safari.
- Park is closed to visitors during the monsoon, roughly July to September: check the official dates before booking.
- Tiger sightings are not guaranteed; a zone 1–5 permit and a full-day slot improve odds but do not promise anything.
- Ranthambore Fort has long flights of steps and monkeys that grab food and bags — keep nothing loose.
- Summer afternoons exceed 40 °C; carry water and start drives at dawn.
The town is calm and the main risks are practical: safari touts selling fake permits, monkeys at the fort, and heat in April–June. Solo women report more staring than in big cities; standard precautions apply after dark.
