Szentendre is a small Danube-side town 19 km north of Budapest, reached on the H5 suburban train in about 40 minutes. Its draw is the compact old town: Serbian Orthodox churches, cobbled lanes and a dense run of small galleries and museums. Most travellers see it as a day trip; a single night buys you empty morning streets before the Budapest crowds arrive.

Getting around

The old town is small and flat: walk everywhere. The H5 HÉV and the bus station sit next to each other, about 10 minutes south of Fő tér. Local buses run to the Skanzen open-air museum roughly hourly; buy the ticket in advance or pay more from the driver. In summer, boats link the riverside with Budapest and other Danube Bend towns.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime small town; the real risks are pickpockets on the crowded H5 in summer, uneven cobbles, and unposted prices in a few old-town restaurants — ask before you sit.
  • Buy your H5 ticket before boarding: there is no on-board sales and inspectors fine you.
  • Every second H5 train from Budapest stops at Békásmegyer — wait for the next one.
  • Many museums close on Mondays and some shut for winter; check the Ferenczy Museum Center site before you go.
  • The Skanzen is 3 km (1.9 mi) out of town and needs a bus, not a walk.
