- Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
- Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
- East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
- East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
- East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
- Kenya ↗Apply for the Kenya eTA only on the official portal (etakenya.go.ke) at least 3 working days before you fly; lookalike sites charge double. Most African passports have been exempt since 2025.
- Kenya ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and check whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route, including transits.
- Kenya ↗Plastic carrier bags are banned; leave shop and duty-free plastic bags behind before you fly in.
- Kenya ↗Light aircraft to the parks have strict baggage limits, usually soft-sided bags only and a low total weight (often around 15 kg); confirm the limit with your operator and leave a hard case in Nairobi.

Lake Nakuru is one of Kenya’s two Premium Parks, set around a shallow soda lake in the Southern Rift Valley. It is the easiest place in the country to see black and white rhinos at close range because the park is fully fenced. Flamingos gather here when water levels suit them, but their numbers swing wildly with rainfall and algae blooms. The park lacks elephants due to its size and fencing, making it a specialist destination for rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes, and birdlife rather than a general 'Big Five' safari.

Why go
- The easiest place in Kenya to see both black and white rhino at close range, in a fenced park with good roads.
- Flamingo flocks on the lake when water levels and algae suit them, plus pelicans, storks and fish eagles.
- Rothschild's giraffe, which were moved here in the 1970s and now breed in the park.
- A two-hour drive from Nairobi on a good highway, so it fits a single day or one night between Nairobi and the Mara.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Most main loop roads are graded and can be driven in a 2WD saloon or a minibus.
- Viewpoints such as Baboon Cliff involve steps and uneven ground; ask your driver for the flattest approach.
- There are no paved paths or wheelchair-adapted vehicles in the park; a private 4WD with a driver is the practical option.
Visiting lightly
- Do not pay for flamingo 'guarantees'; flock numbers depend on the lake, and chasing birds stresses them.
- Stay on the marked roads to avoid compacting the shoreline and disturbing nesting water birds.
- Buy supplies and souvenirs in Nakuru town rather than lodge gift shops, so more of the money stays local.
- Take all rubbish back to Nairobi or Nakuru; the park has almost no waste collection.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to enter Lake Nakuru National Park?
As a 2026 estimate, non-resident adults pay about US$60–100 per person per day and children about US$35–60, plus a small vehicle fee. Lake Nakuru is one of Kenya's two Premium Parks, so it costs more than most others and rates rise in peak season. Check the current KWS tariff before you travel.
What are the best hikes in Lake Nakuru National Park?
There are no long hiking trails: this is a drive-and-viewpoint park. The walks worth doing are short — Baboon Cliff, the Out of Africa lookout and the Makalia Falls area in the wooded south — each 30 minutes to two hours from the car park. Anything longer needs a KWS ranger with you.
When is the best time to visit Lake Nakuru National Park?
July to September and January to February are the driest months and the safest bet for roads and light, but they are also the busiest. April to June is wetter and cheaper with far fewer vehicles, and because the park is fenced the wildlife stays put, so you still see rhino and giraffe.
Can I see flamingos at Lake Nakuru?
Sometimes, and never guaranteed. Flamingo numbers follow water level and algae; when the lake is high or too fresh the flocks move to Lake Bogoria or Lake Elementaita. Ask at the gate what the lake is doing before you plan the day around birds.
Are there elephants in Lake Nakuru National Park?
No. The park is fenced to protect rhino and giraffe and is too small to hold elephants. Go to Amboseli or Tsavo for elephants, and treat Nakuru as a rhino, giraffe and bird stop.
Can I visit Lake Nakuru as a day trip from Nairobi?
Yes. It is about 160 km on the A104 highway, roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way, so a long day trip works if you leave Nairobi by 6:00 and enter the gate at 7:00. One night in or near the park is better if you want a second morning drive.
Do I need a 4WD?
Not for the main loops, which are graded and fine in a 2WD saloon or minibus. A 4WD helps on the northern forest tracks and after heavy rain in April to June and November.
