Plockton is a small planned fishing village on Loch Carron, laid out in the 1810s, with a sheltered harbour, palm-like cabbage trees and a railway halt a mile from the centre. It is a base, not a checklist: one full day covers the village, the seal boat and the coastal walk; two nights let you add Attadale Gardens or a Kyle of Lochalsh day. A car or the train makes it work; the once-a-day bus does not.

Getting around

The village is small and walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end. The railway halt is about a mile (1.6 km) west of the centre, with step-free access but no ticket machine — buy on board. A car makes Attadale, Dornie and Kyle of Lochalsh easy; without one you depend on the train and a single morning bus.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are single-track roads with passing places, fast weather changes on the water and hills, and midges. Tell someone your route if you walk the coast, and carry a rain shell year-round.
  • No village shop: the nearest supermarket is the Co-op in Kyle of Lochalsh, 11 km away.
  • The railway halt has no toilets, ticket office or machines — buy your ticket on the train.
  • Macrae Kintail bus 712 runs once each way in the morning on weekdays and turns straight round, so it is useless for day trips.
  • Mobile signal is basic: Vodafone is patchy, EE and O2 give 4G, Three has nothing here, and there is no 5G.
  • Seal trips sail only in daylight and weather permitting, April to October — book ahead in summer.
  • Midges are fierce on still evenings from June to August; bring repellent.
