KulobКӯлоб

Half a day to see the mausoleum and memorial, then move on: Kulob is a stop on a Khatlon tour, not a base.

Kulob, Tajikistan's third-largest city, is a quiet regional centre in Khatlon. Its main draw is the 14th-century Mausoleum of Mir Said Ali Khamadoni and the 2700th Anniversary Memorial. Most travellers use it as a lunch stop between Dushanbe and the Pamirs or as a short detour from Qurghonteppa.

  • Central Asia ↗Keep every hotel registration slip or its e-registration record until you leave Uzbekistan and Tajikistan; border officers can ask for proof of where you slept and fine gaps.
  • Central Asia ↗Land borders between Central Asian states open and shut with politics and demarcation deals; confirm the exact post is open to foreigners the week you cross.
  • Tajikistan ↗Check entry rules on the official e-visa portal only; many nationalities need an e-visa, and the Gorno-Badakhshan (Pamir) region needs an extra permit.
  • Tajikistan ↗Carry Tajik somoni in small notes; markets, taxis and tea houses are cash-first, and cards work mainly in hotels and larger shops in Dushanbe.
  • Tajikistan ↗Land borders, including those with Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, have been closed or restricted at times: confirm the current status before you plan an overland leg.

Watch out

Safety

Kulob is safe for daytime sightseeing. Watch for uneven pavements and stray dogs near the memorial. Avoid walking alone after dark in unlit areas.
  • Power cuts happen in winter; carry a power bank.
  • Few ATMs; bring enough somoni from Dushanbe or Qurghonteppa.
  • English is not widely spoken; Russian or Tajik phrases help.
