Žabljak sits at 1,450 m, the highest town in the Balkans, and is the base for Durmitor National Park and the Tara Canyon. The town itself is a few streets of guesthouses and restaurants; the reason to come is outside it. Two nights covers Black Lake, one viewpoint drive and a canyon stop. Hikers, rafters and skiers add nights.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. Black Lake is a 20–25 minute walk from the centre. Everything else — Tara Canyon, Sedlo, Savin Kuk, the Piva side — needs a car, taxi or organised tour. Mountain roads are narrow and slow; allow more time than the distance suggests.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists; the real risks are mountain weather, unmarked trail junctions and winter driving on untreated roads. Tell someone your route if you go beyond Black Lake.
  • Mountain weather turns fast: carry a rain shell and warm layer even in July.
  • Trails away from Black Lake hold snow outside summer; proper shoes needed.
  • Mountain roads are curvy with no barriers in places; drive in daylight and keep headlights on (Montenegrin law).
  • Restaurants are small and cook to order: reserve or order a few hours ahead in high season.
  • Many guesthouses take cash only; carry euros.
