Kropyvnytskyi is the administrative centre of Kirovohrad Oblast, on the Inhul river, a junction of the M-12 and M-13 highways and a stop on the Znamianka–Pomichna rail line. It was founded in 1754 as Yelisavetgrad and its centre still holds 19th-century buildings, some renovated, some not. There is no civil aviation: Ukraine's airspace is closed. Plan it as a stop between Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro or Chișinău, not as a base for a week.

Getting around

Buses, trolleybuses and marshrutkas cover the city; single rides are a few hryvnia (2026 estimate). Taxis through Bolt, Uklon or OnTaxi are cheap and the easiest way to move with bags. The centre is flat and walkable between the theatre, the philharmonic and the markets.

A quiet inland city, but this is wartime Ukraine: check your government's travel advice, keep alerts on, and know your shelter. Petty theft is low; the real risks are air raids, winter ice and unlit side streets.
