Jinan济南

Two nights covers Daming Lake, Baotu Spring, Black Tiger Spring and Qianfo Mountain on foot; add a night only for a Qufu or Tai'an day trip.

Jinan is the capital of Shandong and the hub of the province's high-speed rail, 1 h 40 min from Beijing and 1 h 30 min from Qingdao. Its sights sit in one north-south line through the centre: Daming Lake, Quancheng Square, Baotu Spring, Black Tiger Spring and Qianfo Mountain. Most travellers give it two nights, or use it as the base for Qufu and Mount Tai.

  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • China ↗Most nationalities need a visa, a unilateral visa-free entry (the list and end dates change) or the transit exemption below. Confirm your route on the official sites before you buy a ticket.
  • China ↗Transit stay without a visa: up to 240 hours (10 days) for citizens of about 55 listed countries who pass through China to a third country or region, with a confirmed onward ticket and a stay inside the permitted area (Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei count as one area). It replaced the 144-hour rule in December 2024, which some older pages still quote. Use the transit lane at immigration, show the onward ticket, and check the current nationality list. Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The metro (lines 1, 2 and 3) is fast and reliable but does not reach the centre; the nearest stop to Daming Lake is Beiyuan, about 1 km north. Buses cost ¥1, or ¥2 air-conditioned, and stop lists are in Chinese only. Taxis start around ¥7.50 but drivers rarely read pinyin or maps, so carry your destination in Chinese characters. The moat and Daming Lake boats are a sightseeing loop, not transport.

Qufu

go

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

High-speed train from Jinan West or Jinan Station to Qufu East, then a bus or taxi to the temple and mansion

Confucius Temple, Mansion and Cemetery; a full day, or sleep one night to see it without rushing.

Tai'an and Mount Tai

overnight

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

High-speed train to Tai'an, about 20–30 min, then bus or taxi to the trailheads

The climb and descent take most of a day; sleep in Tai'an if you want the sunrise from the summit.

Zibo

go

Door to door: 1.5 h

High-speed train from Jinan Station, about 40 min

Museum and barbecue stop; easy half-day if you are heading east anyway.

Qingdao

overnight

Door to door: 2 h

High-speed train from Jinan Station, about 1 h 30 min

Too far for a comfortable return day; move on and sleep there.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Quancheng Square and Baotu Spring

Walk to Baotu Spring, Black Tiger Spring and the old town; best for a two-night stay without a car.

Daming Lake area

Quieter, on the lake and the Confucius Temple; 15–20 min walk south to Quancheng Square.

Jinan Station area

Cheapest beds and the long-distance bus station opposite; convenient for an early train, less so for sights.

Jinan West Station area

For Beijing–Shanghai high-speed trains only; about 45 min by road from the centre (check).

Watch out

Safety

Jinan is a low-crime city and safe to walk by day; the real issues are traffic, taxi overcharging and summer heat. Carry your passport for museum entry and keep the tourist hotline saved.
  • Carry your passport: many museums are free but refuse entry without ID.
  • Taxis are hard to find 07:00–08:00 and 18:00–19:00, and drivers may avoid the rank at Jinan Station; use a ride-hailing app instead.
  • Some drivers overcharge visitors: agree the fare or use the meter and keep the receipt.
  • Summer is hot and wet, with most rain in July and August; spring is dry and dusty.
  • The underground shopping centre under Quancheng Square has flooded in heavy rain: stay out of it in a downpour.
