Jinan is the capital of Shandong and the hub of the province's high-speed rail, 1 h 40 min from Beijing and 1 h 30 min from Qingdao. Its sights sit in one north-south line through the centre: Daming Lake, Quancheng Square, Baotu Spring, Black Tiger Spring and Qianfo Mountain. Most travellers give it two nights, or use it as the base for Qufu and Mount Tai.

Scams and watch-outs

- Taxis are hard to find 07:00–08:00 and 18:00–19:00, and drivers may avoid the rank at Jinan Station; use a ride-hailing app instead.
- Some drivers overcharge visitors: agree the fare or use the meter and keep the receipt.
- Summer is hot and wet, with most rain in July and August; spring is dry and dusty.
- The underground shopping centre under Quancheng Square has flooded in heavy rain: stay out of it in a downpour.
