Asansolআসানসোল

Give Asansol one night only if you are passing on the Howrah–Delhi line or visiting Churulia; otherwise base in Durgapur or Kolkata.

Asansol is West Bengal's second-largest urban area and a coal, steel and railway town on the Grand Trunk Road, about 200 km northwest of Kolkata. It has almost no tourist infrastructure: the sights are a 14th-century stone temple, a steel plant, a wax museum and riverside parks. Most travellers use it as a rail junction, a one-night halt, or a half-day for Kazi Nazrul Islam's birthplace at Churulia.

  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • India ↗Apply for the e-visa only on the official government portal (indianvisaonline.gov.in); lookalike sites charge extra. Check the current rules, fees and how far ahead to apply.
  • India ↗Do not follow anyone who says your hotel is closed, the station ticket office is closed or a road is shut; use the prepaid taxi counter, the metro or an app car.
  • India ↗Carry Indian rupees in small notes (10, 20, 50, 100); change for 500 is often refused.
  • India ↗Parts of the Northeast, Sikkim, Ladakh, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and all border belts need a Protected or Restricted Area Permit or an Inner Line Permit for foreigners; check before you book the route.

Getting around

Auto-rickshaws, cycle rickshaws and hired cars; meters are not used, so agree the fare before boarding. Yellow-and-blue Ambassador taxis wait at the railway station and a few fixed points. Distances are short in the centre but Burnpur and Nehru Park are 14 km out — take a car, not an auto.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

GT Road / Station Road area

Walkable to Asansol Junction and the bus stand; most hotels and the main market are here.

Bastin Bazar / Asansol Market

Budget hotels clustered around the bazaar, 2 km (1.2 mi) from the station; noisy but central.

Burnpur

Quieter, near the IISCO steel plant and Nehru Park; 14 km (8.7 mi) from the station, so you need a car.

Watch out

Safety

Asansol is a working industrial city, not a tourist town: petty theft and overcharging are the realistic risks, not violence. Keep to lit main roads after dark, agree fares first, and treat the railway station area as busy rather than dangerous.
  • Agree every auto or taxi fare before you get in; no meters.
  • Summer (Apr–Jun) tops 35 °C (95 °F) and the monsoon (Jun–Sep) brings 240–350 mm monthly rain.
  • Industrial roads carry coal and steel trucks; cross with care and avoid cycling on the GT Road.
  • Hotel standards vary widely at the same price — see the room before paying.
