Asansol is West Bengal's second-largest urban area and a coal, steel and railway town on the Grand Trunk Road, about 200 km northwest of Kolkata. It has almost no tourist infrastructure: the sights are a 14th-century stone temple, a steel plant, a wax museum and riverside parks. Most travellers use it as a rail junction, a one-night halt, or a half-day for Kazi Nazrul Islam's birthplace at Churulia.
