  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

San Mateo is a Peninsula town between San Francisco and Silicon Valley, 10–15 minutes from SFO by car. It is a practical base, not a sightseeing destination: a walkable downtown of restaurants, a Japanese tea garden in Central Park, and Coyote Point on the bay. Most travellers sleep here before a flight or use it as a cheaper bed than San Francisco.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the easy way; US-101 and I-280 cross the city. Without one, Caltrain stops at San Mateo, Hayward Park and Hillsdale, and SamTrans buses cover El Camino Real. Downtown is flat and walkable between 2nd and 5th Avenues.

Caltrain one stop north, or a short drive on El Camino Real

Burlingame Avenue is the better evening stroll.

Redwood City

Courthouse Square for dinner and a movie.

Menlo Parkcaution

Bayshore / SFO corridor

Airport hotels with shuttle runs; cheapest beds, nothing to walk to.

Watch out

Safety

A low-risk suburban city; the real issues are car break-ins near trailheads and the airport corridor, and fast traffic on El Camino Real. Walk downtown after dark without concern.
  • Sales tax is added at the till; posted prices are not final.
  • Tipping is expected: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, US$1–2 a drink.
  • Caltrain runs a limited late-night schedule; check the last train before a night in San Francisco.
  • Rush hour on US-101 north to SF can double the drive time.
