Rosyth exists because the Royal Navy built a dockyard here from 1909, and it still reads as a planned industrial town rather than a visitor destination. The coast west of the docks at Limekilns and Charlestown is the one reason to get off the train, and it is a 30–40 minute walk from the station. Almost every traveller is better off sleeping in Dunfermline or North Queensferry and treating Rosyth as a rail halt.

Getting around

Rosyth is strung out along the A985 and Queensferry Road with no bus station. Stagecoach X55 (Edinburgh via Ferrytoll), bus 7 (coastal, Leven–Kirkcaldy–Dunfermline) and bus 19 (Lochore–Dunfermline) all cross the town and give roughly a bus every 10 min to Dunfermline. Trains run every 30 min to Edinburgh Waverley (30 min) and on to Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath and Glenrothes. Taxis: local operators only; agree the fare before you get in.

Heath Road / south near the docks

Hillpark Hotel and Caledonia Hotel; quieter, but a 15–20 min walk from the station with no footpath shortcuts.

Dunfermline (3 miles north)

Better value and more choice; buses run every 10 min from Rosyth. Use this unless you specifically need Rosyth.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; the real issues are unlit dockland roads after dark, fast traffic on the A985 and Queensferry Road, and no staff at the station. Standard UK precautions apply.
  • Rosyth Castle is unsafe inside and exterior access has been closed; you can see the ruin from Murray Road but not enter.
  • Rosyth station is an unstaffed platform halt: ticket machines, no toilets, no left luggage.
  • The Fife Coastal Path through the dockland stretch is the least attractive section; follow Milne Road west rather than swinging inland.
  • Buses stop on the main roads, not at a central interchange: check which road your stop is on before you set out.
  • Coastal path sections flood or turn muddy after rain; wear shoes with grip.
