Rosyth
Skip Rosyth as a base: an industrial dock town with no hotel above £90 and nothing to see. Sleep in Dunfermline, 3 miles north, and use Rosyth station only to change trains.
Rosyth exists because the Royal Navy built a dockyard here from 1909, and it still reads as a planned industrial town rather than a visitor destination. The coast west of the docks at Limekilns and Charlestown is the one reason to get off the train, and it is a 30–40 minute walk from the station. Almost every traveller is better off sleeping in Dunfermline or North Queensferry and treating Rosyth as a rail halt.

Get around
Rosyth is strung out along the A985 and Queensferry Road with no bus station. Stagecoach X55 (Edinburgh via Ferrytoll), bus 7 (coastal, Leven–Kirkcaldy–Dunfermline) and bus 19 (Lochore–Dunfermline) all cross the town and give roughly a bus every 10 min to Dunfermline. Trains run every 30 min to Edinburgh Waverley (30 min) and on to Dunfermline, Cowdenbeath and Glenrothes. Taxis: local operators only; agree the fare before you get in.

- Buses stop on the main roads, not at a central interchange: check which road your stop is on before you set out.
- Coastal path sections flood or turn muddy after rain; wear shoes with grip.
