Érd is Hungary's largest town without county rights by population in Pest County terms — about 63,000–67,000 people — sitting 18 km southwest of Budapest on the Danube's right bank. It is a commuter town with a genuine Ottoman minaret, two small museums and a riverside escarpment. Almost nobody needs a night here; the reason to come is a cheap, quiet bed within a 16-minute train ride of Budapest-Déli, or a half-day for the Ófalu old town.

Getting around

Volánbusz local buses run the town; buy tickets at the bus station or from the driver (higher price). Two train stations sit in the centre — Érd alsó (S30/Z30, 16 min from Budapest-Déli) and Érd felső (S40/S42, 25 min) — plus Érd, Érdliget and Tétényliget on the outskirts, so check which stop your address is near before boarding. Taxis are cheap for short hops; several local firms operate.

Watch out

Safety

Érd is a quiet commuter town and feels safe day and night; the real issues are unlit, uneven paths at the minaret and the escarpment, and weekend train gaps that strand you in Budapest after the last service.
  • Two central stations, five in total: getting off at the wrong one adds a long walk or a bus ride.
  • The minaret is visitable only by appointment, and the worn, unlit stairs are climbed at your own risk.
  • Suburban trains run hourly on weekends on some lines — check the last return before an evening in Budapest.
  • Museum hours shorten in Dec–Mar; several sights close on Mondays.
