Sighișoara is a Saxon citadel on the Târnava Mare, UNESCO-listed and still lived in, with a 64 m Clock Tower at its centre. The old town is small enough to cover on foot in half a day, so most travellers sleep one night here between Brașov/Sibiu and Târgu Mureș, or use it as a base for the fortified churches at Saschiz, Apold and Viscri. Two nights only pays off if you have a car and want the villages.

The citadel and lower town are walkable; the railway station and bus station sit together about 1 km north of the old centre, 12–15 min on foot. Local buses cover the rest of town. For the fortified churches you need a car, a bike or a taxi.

Watch out

Safety

Sighișoara is a small, low-crime town and the citadel is busy with visitors by day. The real risks are uneven cobbles and stairs, fast driving on the DN13, and dogs in outlying villages; keep to marked paths on the Breite plateau.
  • The citadel is on a hill with cobbles and stairs: wheeled luggage is awkward, and the Covered Staircase has 175 steps.
  • Parking in the historic centre is paid and coin-only at the meter; leave the car below and walk up. Vehicle access into the citadel is restricted — check locally.
  • Restaurant terraces on Piața Cetății price for tourists: check the menu before sitting.
  • Trains and buses to smaller towns are few and slow; check times the day before, not on the day.
