Ålesund is a compact Art Nouveau town rebuilt after the 1904 fire, spread over islands at the mouth of the Geirangerfjord. Two nights covers the centre, the Aksla viewpoint and one fjord or aquarium trip; it is the regional transport hub, but not a cheap base for the Sunnmøre Alps.

Getting around

The old centre is walkable in under 20 minutes end to end. Local buses (Nettbuss, on behalf of Møre og Romsdal county) run from Ålesund rutebilstasjon at Keiser Wilhelmsgate 6; service thins after 17:00 Saturdays and on Sundays. A summer 'Akvariebussen' runs to the Atlantic Sea-Park. Taxis are expensive — expect 200 kr or more for a short hop, more at night and weekends.

Watch out

Safety

Ålesund is a low-crime town; the real risks are wet, windy weather, slippery Aksla steps and expensive taxis after midnight. Keep to lit streets around the centre at closing time.
  • Taxis are very expensive; at least 200 kr even for a short trip, higher evenings and weekends.
  • Buses are limited late evening, after 17:00 on Saturdays and all day Sunday.
  • Alcohol stronger than 4.7% is only sold at Vinmonopolet, which closes at 18:00 (check Saturday hours).
  • Bars close at 03:00 by law; taxi queues after 02:00 are long — book earlier.
  • Cruise-ship days fill the centre, the city train and the hop-on hop-off bus; check the port schedule.
