Madurai is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India and the temple town of Tamil Nadu, built around the Meenakshi Amman temple with its painted gopurams. It is a working pilgrimage and market city rather than a resort: most travellers come for two nights, walk the temple streets at dawn and eat Chettinad food in the evening. It is also the rail junction for onward trips south to Kanyakumari and west to the hill stations.

Getting around

Autos have no meters: agree the fare before you get in, roughly ₹10 per km by day and ₹15 at night (2026 estimate). App autos (Uber, Ola, Rapido) often add ₹20–50 on top of the app fare and take cash or UPI. Local buses run from Periyar bus stand and are cheap but crowded at rush hour. A car with driver for a half-day of outlying temples runs about ₹600–650 (check).

Watch out

Safety

Madurai is a busy pilgrimage city and generally safe for visitors by day. The real risks are heat, traffic, unmarked auto fares and the crush around the temple at festival time: keep bags in front, agree fares first, and avoid the temple queue on Chithrai festival days unless you want the crowd.
  • Temple rules: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off outside the shrines; phones and cameras are restricted inside the Meenakshi temple — check the posted rules at the gate.
  • Auto and taxi touts at the station and airport quote two or three times the going rate: fix the price first or use the prepaid counter.
  • Drink only sealed bottled water; ice and cut fruit from street stalls are a common cause of a lost day.
  • Summer heat from April to June is the real risk — plan temple visits before 10:00 and after 16:00.
