Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Hungary ↗Hungary is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Hungary ↗The currency is the Hungarian forint (HUF), not the euro: decline dynamic currency conversion at cards and ATMs.
  • Hungary ↗Motorways need an electronic vignette (e-matrica) bought before you drive on them.

Ózd is a former iron-works town in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, one of the poorest in Hungary, 53 km from Miskolc. Its draw is a compact industrial-heritage cluster on Gyár út — a factory-history museum, a national film theme park and a digital exhibition in the old power plant — plus two medieval and Baroque churches in the outlying villages. Rail and bus both run about every two hours; the town is a day trip or a single night, not a multi-day stop.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

Local Volánbusz services cover the town and the outer villages; buy tickets from the driver. Taxis are the fallback after the last buses. The heritage sights on Gyár út are a short walk from each other; the village churches need a bus or a car.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Miskolc

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

Train or bus, roughly every two hours

County seat with the Diósgyőr castle and a cave bath at Miskolctapolca; the obvious pairing.

Putnok

caution

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Train on the Miskolc line

Small stop on the same rail line; combine with Ózd rather than making it the destination.

Kazincbarcika

caution

Door to door: About 45 min

Train or bus toward Miskolc

Another industrial town; worth it only if you are following the factory-history thread.

Edelény

go

Door to door: check — about 1 h

check — bus or car via the Sajó valley

The Baroque L'Huillier–Coburg mansion is the reason to go; check opening days first.

Sárospatak

overnight

Door to door: check — 2.5–3 h

check — rail via Miskolc, or car

Too far for a comfortable return day; sleep there and continue to Tokaj.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Town centre (Gyár út / Vasvár út)

Walkable to the museum cluster, market hall and most restaurants; the practical choice for one night.

Bolyki főút corridor

Bus lines 2, 20 and 20A; supermarkets, pizzerias and pubs, but a longer walk to the sights.

Borsodnádasd

Separate small town to the south-west; only if you have a reason to be there.

Watch out

Safety

Ózd is a quiet, low-income town rather than a dangerous one; the practical risks are thin late-night transport, unlit side streets and closed kitchens after mid-afternoon. Standard city precautions are enough.
  • Some sights sit in outlying villages (Szentsimon, Sajóvárkony, Csernely, Sáta): check the bus line before you set out.
  • The outdoor bath and camping run Jun–Aug only.
  • Several restaurants close by mid-afternoon; plan lunch, not a late dinner.
  • This is a low-income town with a shrinking population: keep to lit streets at night and do not leave bags in a parked car.
