Modesto is a San Joaquin Valley farm city on Highway 99, halfway between Sacramento and Fresno and about two hours from Yosemite. Its draw is food, a restored 1883 mansion and low hotel rates, not a sight list. Most travellers use it as a bed between the Bay Area and the Sierra, or to visit family.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights and hotels are spread along Highway 99 and McHenry Avenue. Modesto Area Express buses run the core ($1.25) and Stanislaus Regional Transit covers the county ($1.50). Amtrak's San Joaquins stops about 5 miles east of downtown at 1700 Held Dr; bus 25 links it to the centre.

Safety

Modesto is a normal mid-size US city with pockets of property crime; central Modesto and the hotel strips are fine by day, and the main risks are summer heat, winter fog on Highway 99 and leaving bags in a parked car.
  • Summer heat is real: 95°F (35°C) average highs and regular spells above 103°F (39°C). Carry water and plan indoor stops midday.
  • Winter tule fog on Highway 99 cuts visibility to a few car lengths; slow down and use low beams.
  • Downtown is quiet after dark and some blocks feel empty; park in lit lots and walk in pairs.
  • Do not leave anything visible in a parked car, including in hotel lots.
  • Amtrak's Modesto station is not downtown — arrange a ride or the bus before you arrive.
