Modesto is a San Joaquin Valley farm city on Highway 99, halfway between Sacramento and Fresno and about two hours from Yosemite. Its draw is food, a restored 1883 mansion and low hotel rates, not a sight list. Most travellers use it as a bed between the Bay Area and the Sierra, or to visit family.

A car is the practical choice: sights and hotels are spread along Highway 99 and McHenry Avenue.
