  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Reach this subregion only from the EU side — Romania for Moldova — through crossings run by recognised authorities; no route through Ukraine, Belarus or Russia is planned here.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Re-read your government's advice for Moldova (it covers Transnistria) in the week you travel; the situation next door changes fast.
  • Eastern Europe ↗Carry euros in cash for Transnistria and village Moldova; cards stop working at the Dniester.
  • Ukraine ↗Check your own government travel advice for Ukraine before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • Ukraine ↗Airspace is closed; entry is by rail or road from Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania or Moldova, with long queues at busy crossings.
  • Ukraine ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to Ukraine before you rely on it.

Odesa is a Black Sea port city of about a million people whose main draw is the 19th-century grid of the old town, from Pryvoz in the south to the Potemkin Steps in the north, plus a strip of sandy beaches at Lanzheron and Arcadia. Ukraine's airspace is closed to civil aviation, so arrivals come overland: train from Kyiv or Lviv, bus or marshrutka from Chișinău in Moldova, or long-distance coach from Poland and other neighbours. Two nights covers the walkable core; three lets you add a beach day or a day trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The old town grid is compact and partly pedestrianised, so walk it. Trams, trolleybuses and marshrutkas cover the rest; pay the conductor on board or the driver on exit. Tram 5 links the bus station area to Arcadia and the beaches; trams 3 and 12 run along Preobrazhenska Street past Deribasivska and Cathedral Square. For taxis, local apps such as Uklon are usually cheaper and more reliable than global ones; Uber, Bolt and OnTaxi also operate.

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi

go

Door to door: About 3 h

Marshrutka from Pryvoz bus station, about 1.5–2 h

Fortress walls and the Dniester lagoon; half a day is enough.

Vylkove

Door to door: 3–4 h

Bus or marshrutka via Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, then boat

Danube delta town; too far for a comfortable return day.

Mykolaiv

Door to door: About 3 h

Bus from Pryvoz, about 2.5 h

Frontline region with repeated shelling; do not travel without official clearance.

Izmail

overnight

Door to door: 5 h+

Bus or marshrutka, 4–5 h

Far southwest; only worth it with a night there.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town / Deribasivska

Walkable to the Opera House, City Gardens and the promenade; most cafés and restaurants are here.

Pryvoz (railway station area)

Handy for late arrivals and early departures; grubbier streets, cheaper beds, 2 km walk to the centre.

Arcadia

Beach and nightlife strip south of the centre; summer-only for most visitors, 20–30 min by tram or taxi.

Lanzheron

Closer beach than Arcadia, quieter, walkable to the old town in about 30 min.

Watch out

Safety

The main risk is the security situation, not street crime: read your own government's travel advice and follow local air-raid alerts. Day to day, watch for unmetered taxis, pickpockets on crowded transport and uneven pavements in the old town.
  • Read your own government's travel advice first; this desk does not plan around the security situation.
  • Airspace is closed to civil aviation: no commercial flights into ODS for now.
  • Some old-town blocks are in serious disrepair; watch your footing on pavements and stairs.
  • Touts and unmetered taxis at the station: agree the price or use an app.
  • Beach water quality and lifeguard cover vary; check locally before swimming.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Odesa. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: May–Sep · avoid Dec–Feb (cold, grey, sea wind)
  2. 2 airports and 4 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 4 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for ODS and RMO: current status, onward bus and train options, taxi fallback.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: Pryvoz, the old town spine, the promenade and Potemkin Steps, Arcadia.
  3. Place pages with verified hours (Opera House, Transfiguration Cathedral, Pryvoz Market) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Hostile arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
