It has one headline draw for visitors — Americana Manhasset, a luxury open-air shopping centre on Northern Boulevard — plus a compact town-centre strip on Plandome Road. There is no hotel worth planning around and almost nothing to see after dark, so most travellers pass through on the way to Port Washington or back to Manhattan.

Getting around

The LIRR Port Washington branch stops at Manhasset station, roughly 35–45 min from Penn Station and one stop from Plandome. Northern Boulevard (NY-25A) is the main road through the hamlet and is walkable in parts but has fast traffic and few crossings. Local buses run along Northern Boulevard; a car or rideshare is easier for Americana and the hospital campus. Parking at Americana is free in the surface lots.

The only beds inside the hamlet are budget motels on Northern Boulevard. They are cheap and close to Macy's and Americana, but they are a last resort — see the safety note.

Port Washington

Two LIRR stops east, with a waterfront, more restaurants and a wider choice of rooms. The better base for a North Shore night.

Great Neck

Two stops west toward Manhattan; more hotels and a shorter ride into the city.

Watch out

Safety

Manhasset is a low-crime residential hamlet and is fine on foot in daylight. The one spot locals flag is the budget motel strip on Northern Boulevard after dark; the police precinct is nearby and 911 works everywhere.
  • Northern Boulevard is a highway-style road with fast traffic: cross only at signals.
  • The budget motel on Northern Boulevard has a poor local reputation for overnight activity; if you need a bed, book in Port Washington or Great Neck instead.
  • Americana Manhasset stores keep their own hours and some close on Sundays or Mondays: check before you go.
  • Greentree is a private foundation estate and is not open to the public: view it from the road only.
  • Summer weekends bring heavy traffic on the Long Island Expressway and Northern Boulevard.
