Rules in force · 6Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) giv…
  • Central America ↗Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) give one shared entry allowance, usually 90 days in total; leaving for Belize, Costa Rica or Mexico and coming back does not always reset it — check with immigration before a long stay.
  • Central America ↗Cross land borders in daylight and early in the day; many posts close or empty of transport by late afternoon, and the approaches are where robberies happen.
  • Central America ↗Several borders charge entry, exit or municipal fees in US dollars (Belize exit, Nicaragua entry and exit, Honduras entry); carry small, clean US notes and ask for a receipt.
  • El Salvador ↗Check entry rules for your passport with El Salvador's migration authority or a Salvadoran consulate; the CA-4 agreement with Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua can make your permitted stay count across all four.
  • El Salvador ↗A state of exception has been in force since 2022, suspending some legal protections: carry your passport or a copy, cooperate at checkpoints and avoid photographing police, military or prisons.
  • El Salvador ↗Carry US dollars in small notes; bitcoin acceptance has been voluntary since 2025 and few businesses take it.

Berlín sits at about 1,000 m on the flank of the Tecapa volcano in Usulután department, roughly 2 hours from San Salvador and 1 hour from Alegría. It is a coffee town with a cool climate, a white cross viewpoint above the grid, and the crater lake Laguna de Alegría a short bus ride away. Most travellers use it as one or two nights between the Ruta de las Flores and San Miguel, not as a base for a whole trip.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. Moto-taxis (tuk-tuks) cover short hops for a few dollars. Buses to Alegría and down to Mercedes Umaña leave from beside the City Hall; the last one down leaves in the late afternoon, so plan the return before dark.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Laguna de Alegría

go

Door to door: About 1.5–2 h

Bus from beside the City Hall toward Santiago de María, every 45 min; get off past Alegría at the cobblestone path, then walk about 2.5 km through coffee farms

Small entry fee at the gate; the green colour is strongest in bright midday sun.

Alegría

go

Door to door: About 45 min

Same bus, stay on to the town centre

Painted houses and cool air; easy to combine with the laguna in one day.

San Miguel

go

Door to door: About 2–2.5 h

Bus down to Mercedes Umaña, then a San Miguel-bound bus on the Pan-American highway

Eastern hub for the coast at El Cuco; go in the morning.

Santa Rosa de Lima

caution

Door to door: About 2.5 h

Bus via Mercedes Umaña and the Pan-American highway

Long for a day return; better as a through-stop.

San Francisco Gotera

skip

Door to door: About 2.5–3 h

Bus via Mercedes Umaña, then north

Too far for a day trip from Berlín.

Around Parque Central

The whole grid is walkable; hostels and comedores sit within 3 blocks of the park.

North and west edges of town

Quieter streets toward the Cerro de la Cruz trailhead; moto-taxis cover the last stretch.

Watch out

Safety

Berlín is a small, quiet highland town and the usual cautions apply: walk the centre by day, avoid unlit streets after dark, carry small cash, and take a guide for the unsigned trails. Check current national advisories before you travel.
  • The Cerro de la Cruz trail is unsigned in places; a local guide or a child from the neighbourhood is the usual fix, and a tip is expected.
  • Trails are clay and slippery after rain; the crater-rim route is a full-day, medium-hard hike.
  • Last buses down to Mercedes Umaña leave around 18:30 — miss it and you are paying for a taxi or staying another night.
  • Cool nights at this altitude: bring a light jacket even in the dry season.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for SAL: last-leg options via San Salvador, taxi fallback, overnight rung.
  2. Walking clusters with rescue anchors: Parque Central, the Cerro de la Cruz trailhead, the bus stop by City Hall.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Cerro de la Cruz, Laguna de Alegría, crater-rim route) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Rain and hostile-arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
