Miskolc
Base yourself in central Miskolc for 1–2 nights, then spend a half-day at Miskolctapolca's cave bath and a day in the Bükk hills; skip if you only have Budapest time.
Miskolc is Hungary's third-largest city and the gateway to the Bükk mountains, but its best-known attraction — the cave thermal bath at Miskolctapolca — sits about 5 km south of the centre. The downtown has a walkable main street, a handful of churches and a spa culture; most travellers use it as a 1–2 night stop between Budapest and the Tokaj or Aggtelek regions, or as a base for Lillafüred and Diósgyőr Castle.
