  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Wuxi sits halfway between Shanghai and Nanjing on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line, under 30 minutes from Suzhou. It is a working industrial city of 7.5 million with a genuine draw: the north shore of Lake Tai, the Grand Canal old town, and a cluster of gardens and temples on Xihui hill. Domestic tourists fill it in spring; foreign visitors mostly pass through. Treat it as a day trip or a single night unless you are adding Lingshan.

Getting around

Four metro lines cover the station, Nanchang Street, Lihu Lake and the airport; Line 1 is the workhorse. Buses fill the gaps but signage is Chinese-first. Taxis and ride-hailing are cheap; the lake sights (Yuantouzhu, Lingshan) are 20–40 min by car and awkward by bus.

Watch out

Safety

Wuxi is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are summer heat and rain, traffic when crossing wide roads, and unmarked prices in canal-side bars: ask the total before you order.
  • Summer is humid with heavy June–August rain; plan indoor or lake-side mornings.
  • Yuantouzhu and Lingshan are far apart on the lake — do not try both in one afternoon.
  • Some sights take cash-free payment only via Alipay or WeChat Pay; set one up before you arrive.
  • Temple and theme-park ticket prices change and combo tickets vary: check the official site or the gate before you commit.
