Wuxi sits halfway between Shanghai and Nanjing on the Beijing-Shanghai high-speed line, under 30 minutes from Suzhou. It is a working industrial city of 7.5 million with a genuine draw: the north shore of Lake Tai, the Grand Canal old town, and a cluster of gardens and temples on Xihui hill. Domestic tourists fill it in spring; foreign visitors mostly pass through. Treat it as a day trip or a single night unless you are adding Lingshan.

Get around
Four metro lines cover the station, Nanchang Street, Lihu Lake and the airport; Line 1 is the workhorse. Buses fill the gaps but signage is Chinese-first. Taxis and ride-hailing are cheap; the lake sights (Yuantouzhu, Lingshan) are 20–40 min by car and awkward by bus.
