Luleå
Give Luleå 2 nights: one for Gammelstad and the centre, one for the archipelago or a winter ice day. In summer, add a boat; in deep winter, add a snow day.
Luleå sits at the mouth of the Lule River, about 110 km south of the Arctic Circle, and works as a coastal stop between Umeå and the Lapland rail line. The two things that justify the trip are Gammelstad, the UNESCO-listed church town 10 km north-west, and the archipelago, which is reachable by tour boat in summer and by ski or ice in winter. The centre itself is small and walkable, so most visitors need two nights, not a week.
