Umeå is the largest city in Norrland and the capital of Västerbotten County, near the mouth of the Ume River. It is a university city with a young population, a riverside centre and a compact set of museums and parks. Most travellers reach it by train or plane from Stockholm and use it as a base for the north or as a one- to two-night stop on the coastal route. Winter is long and cold, summer brings near-white nights, and the city is easy to walk or cycle.

Getting around

The centre is walkable and bikes are the local default: rental shops and a used bike from about 400 kr if you stay longer. Local buses run from Vasaplan, about 23 kr per adult ride with an hour of free transfer, card or phone payment only. Taxis and Uber cover the rest; the airport shuttle runs to Vasaplan.

Umeå is calm and safe for a city of its size; the real risks are winter cold, dark icy pavements and unlit paths by the river after a night out. Use 112 for emergencies and 1177 (≈ US$130) for health advice.
