Umeå

Umeå is the largest city in Norrland and the capital of Västerbotten County, near the mouth of the Ume River. It is a university city with a young population, a riverside centre and a compact set of museums and parks. Most travellers reach it by train or plane from Stockholm and use it as a base for the north or as a one- to two-night stop on the coastal route. Winter is long and cold, summer brings near-white nights, and the city is easy to walk or cycle.

The centre is walkable and bikes are the local default: rental shops and a used bike from about 400 kr if you stay longer.
