Virginia City is a preserved silver boomtown on the Geiger Grade above Reno, about 40 minutes by car. Almost everything sits on one street, C Street, and the whole historic core walks end to end in under an hour. Most travellers come as a half-day or day trip from Reno or Carson City; a night here buys quiet evenings and a saloon that stays open late, not more sights.

Walk. C Street runs the length of town and takes under an hour end to end; side streets climb steeply. Drive only for the cemetery, the V&T depot or Dayton. Pay lots charge about $10 a day, and street parking fills by late morning in summer.

Safety

A small, walkable tourist town with a low crime rate; the real risks are the mountain road, steep wooden boardwalks, altitude and winter ice.
  • The Geiger Grade (NV-341) is a winding mountain road: snow, ice and summer thunderstorms all change it fast.
  • Sidewalks are wooden boardwalks with steps and gaps; watch your footing after rain.
  • Altitude is about 1,900 m (6,200 ft): pace yourself and drink water.
  • Saloon gambling is legal here; non-US visitors may face a 30% withholding on big wins.
