Go for one day, not a base: walk C Street in 2–3 hours, add a mine tour or museum, and sleep in Reno or Carson City unless you want the 1870s hotel night.
Virginia City is a preserved silver boomtown on the Geiger Grade above Reno, about 40 minutes by car. Almost everything sits on one street, C Street, and the whole historic core walks end to end in under an hour. Most travellers come as a half-day or day trip from Reno or Carson City; a night here buys quiet evenings and a saloon that stays open late, not more sights.

Get around
Walk. C Street runs the length of town and takes under an hour end to end; side streets climb steeply. Drive only for the cemetery, the V&T depot or Dayton. Pay lots charge about $10 a day, and street parking fills by late morning in summer.
