BadenBaden bei Wien

Base in Vienna and ride the Badner Bahn tram out for one full day: 1 h 15 min door to door, €6.30 each way, spa, park and Beethovenhaus all walkable.

Baden bei Wien is a spa town of about 25,000 people 25 km south of Vienna, part of the UNESCO-listed Great Spa Towns of Europe. The old centre is small and flat, the sulphur springs and the Kurpark are the point, and the two castle ruins above town are a half-day walk. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Vienna; one night makes sense if you want the thermal baths and the casino without a late train.

Rules in force · 7Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Central Europe ↗Six of the nine countries here — Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary and Slovenia — charge a time-based motorway vignette, mostly digital and linked to the number plate; buy it before the first motorway past the border, because cameras, not toll booths, do the checking.
  • Central Europe ↗Temporary police checks at internal Schengen borders are common in this region in 2026 (Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovenia among others — check): keep your passport on you on every cross-border train, bus and road even though there is no fixed control post.
  • Austria ↗Austria is in the EU and the Schengen area: check entry rules, the EU Entry/Exit System and any travel authorisation requirement for your passport on official sources.
  • Austria ↗Motorways and expressways need a vignette (digital or sticker); driving on them without one brings on-the-spot fines.
  • Austria ↗Winter tyres or chains are required in winter conditions; hire cars from outside Austria may not have them fitted.

Getting around

The centre is flat and walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end. Three city bus routes (A, B, C) run Monday–Saturday; single trip €2.10 adults, €1.10 children 6–15, week ticket €15.80. Nextbike rental is about €1/hour, €10/day. Taxis are cheap for short hops; ask the fare before you get in.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min by tram; about 20 min by train plus onward metro

Badner Bahn tram from Josefsplatz, or regional train from Baden station to Wien Meidling

The tram starts near the Vienna Opera and stops at Meidling; buy the ticket before boarding.

Mödling

go

Door to door: About 45–60 min

Train toward Wien Meidling, change, or drive the A2 north

Small old town and the Liechtenstein castle ruins; pairs well with a Baden morning.

Wiener Neustadt

go

Door to door: About 30–40 min

Regional train south on the main line

Useful as a rail junction and a half-day town.

Semmering

overnight

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train south, change at Wiener Neustadt if needed

Mountain rail and hiking; better with a night than as a rushed return.

Klosterneuburg

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 45 min

Train or tram to Vienna, then U4 and bus

Doable but crosses Vienna twice; keep it for a Vienna-based day.

St. Pölten

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 15 min

Train via Wien Meidling or Wiener Neustadt

Regional capital with a compact centre; not a priority on a short trip.

Tulln

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Train via Vienna, or drive the A21

Danube town; easier from Vienna than from Baden.

Perchtoldsdorf

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Train to Wien Liesing or Mödling, then bus or a short taxi

Wine-village feel on Vienna's edge; good with a Baden–Mödling loop.

Old centre around Josefsplatz and Brusattiplatz

Walk to Römertherme, the casino, museums and the tram stop; the only area worth booking if you have no car.

Kurpark edge (Welzergasse, Kaiser Franz Ring)

Quiet, green, 10 min walk to the centre; hotel-park and spa-hotel cluster.

Near the train station (Conrad von Hötzendorf-Platz)

Practical for an early departure; 15 min walk to the old town, fewer restaurants.

Watch out

Safety

Baden is a low-risk small city; the real issues are ticket checks on the tram and train, unlit castle-ruin paths, and slippery stone in the spa areas. Standard precautions apply at night around the casino.
  • Badner Bahn and regional trains are ticket-checked: a fine of about €60 (≈ US$70) applies if you board without a valid ticket.
  • The thermal baths and Römertherme have seasonal hours and last-admission cutoffs; check the day you go.
  • Castle ruins above town are unlit and unguarded: go in daylight, wear shoes with grip, and do not climb the walls.
  • Many small museums close on Mondays and over the Christmas–New Year week.
