Doetinchem
Use Doetinchem as a one-night Achterhoek base: the compact centre, riverbank and two castles fill a day; skip it if you only have Amsterdam time.
Doetinchem is the de facto capital of the Achterhoek, a river town of about 57,000 on the Oude IJssel. The centre was rebuilt after the March 1945 bombings, so it is more useful as a calm base for the region than as a sightseeing destination. One night covers the town; two nights let you add Slangenburg and the abbey by bike.

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Bikes are the local default; rent one for the castle and abbey run. Arriva and Breng trains run the Arnhem–Winterswijk line every 15 minutes between the staffed stations, and Arriva buses cover the villages.
