Doetinchem
Use Doetinchem as a one-night Achterhoek base: the compact centre, riverbank and two castles fill a day; skip it if you only have Amsterdam time.
Doetinchem is the de facto capital of the Achterhoek, a river town of about 57,000 on the Oude IJssel. The centre was rebuilt after the March 1945 bombings, so it is more useful as a calm base for the region than as a sightseeing destination. One night covers the town; two nights let you add Slangenburg and the abbey by bike.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; three cheek kisses among friends; avoid: Hugging new acquaintances
- Directness: Say what you mean; expect honest, blunt answers; avoid: Taking bluntness as rudeness
- Punctuality: Be on time; diaries plan weeks ahead; avoid: Dropping in unannounced
- Money: Split bills; pay your share; avoid: Showing off wealth
- Homes: Bring flowers or a small gift; congratulate everyone at a birthday; avoid: Expecting dinner if invited for coffee
Scams and watch-outs
- Shops close on Sunday; plan food and groceries for Saturday.
- The centre is small: most sights sit within 1.5 km, so a taxi is rarely worth it.
- Castle and museum opening hours change by season: check before you go.
- Summer terraces on Simonsplein are the busiest spot; book a table on event weekends.
Doetinchem is a low-risk Dutch town; the real issues are wet cobbles, bikes on the pavement and quiet streets after the last train. Keep to the centre at night and use 112 only for emergencies.
