The Liemers is a low-lying strip of Gelderland between Arnhem, the Rhine and the German border, made up of Duiven, Westervoort, Zevenaar and the Montferland hills. It is farmland, river forelands and one real sight — Huis Bergh castle in 's-Heerenberg — plus a handful of lakes and a kart track. Trains on the Arnhem–Doetinchem line stop at Westervoort, Duiven, Zevenaar and Didam, so it works as a stopover rather than a destination. Most travellers give it one night or pass through on the way to the Achterhoek.

Getting around

The Arnhem–Doetinchem–Winterswijk train is the spine: Westervoort, Duiven, Zevenaar, Didam and Wehl all have stations, roughly every 30 min. Buses and the OV-Fiets rental bike fill the gaps at several stations. For Montferland, the lakes and 's-Heerenberg, a car is much easier; the A12 cuts through the region and the A18 starts here.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime rural region; the real risks are bikes on shared paths, dark unlit lanes at night and riverbank paths after high water. Standard Netherlands advice applies.
  • Many smaller sights, gardens and the mint at 's-Heerenberg open only by appointment or on limited days: check before you travel.
  • Rural bus frequencies drop sharply in the evening and on Sundays.
  • The Rhine and IJssel forelands flood in high water; some paths and campsites close in winter.
  • Cross-border trains to Germany can be replaced by buses on some weekends: check the operator.
