Hong Kong and Macau count as separate regions; check whether your ticket qualifies.
  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang and the most inland major city in the world, about 2,300 km from any ocean. It is a Han-majority city with a Uyghur quarter around Erdaoqiao, and it works as an arrival hub for the region rather than a sightseeing destination in itself. Two nights covers the museum, the bazaar and one mountain or desert day.

Getting around

Metro line 1 runs from the airport area through the centre; you must show ID to ride. BRT buses (BRT1, 2, 3) use a segregated busway and cost ¥1 — pay into the box on the platform. Metered taxis start at ¥10 for 3 km; a cross-town ride is usually under ¥20. Distances are long and roads wide, so walk only within one district.

Watch out

Safety

Urumqi is heavily policed and street crime is low; the real risks are winter cold, summer heat, pickpockets at the bazaar and tourist-menu pricing. Carry your passport — you need ID for the metro and station searches.
  • Winter nights can fall to -25 °C or lower; summer days pass 35 °C — pack for the season you get.
  • Restaurants beside the Grand Bazaar may hand you a tourist menu with dishes over ¥1,000 (≈ US$140); eat on the side streets instead.
  • Pickpockets work the bazaar and bus queues; keep bags in front.
  • Long-distance trains leave from the main station 20 km northwest, not the South station; allow an hour and expect a security search.
  • Some nationalities need a permit for parts of Xinjiang; check before booking onward travel.
