Urumqi is the capital of Xinjiang and the most inland major city in the world, about 2,300 km from any ocean. It is a Han-majority city with a Uyghur quarter around Erdaoqiao, and it works as an arrival hub for the region rather than a sightseeing destination in itself. Two nights covers the museum, the bazaar and one mountain or desert day.

Scams and watch-outs

- Restaurants beside the Grand Bazaar may hand you a tourist menu with dishes over ¥1,000; eat on the side streets instead.
- Pickpockets work the bazaar and bus queues; keep bags in front.
- Long-distance trains leave from the main station 20 km northwest, not the South station; allow an hour and expect a security search.
- Some nationalities need a permit for parts of Xinjiang; check before booking onward travel.
Urumqi is heavily policed and street crime is low; the real risks are winter cold, summer heat, pickpockets at the bazaar and tourist-menu pricing. Carry your passport — you need ID for the metro and station searches.
