  • South Asia ↗Trekking regions, border districts and several Indian states need separate permits on top of the visa; check the permit before you book transport into them.
  • South Asia ↗Remove shoes (and in many Jain and Hindu temples, leather) before entering; cover shoulders and legs; ask before photographing people or rituals.
  • Nepal ↗Get visa information only from the Department of Immigration; visa-service lookalike sites charge extra, and the rules differ by nationality.
  • Nepal ↗At stupas walk clockwise; at temples and homes remove shoes where there is a rack or a raised floor; cover shoulders and knees.
  • Nepal ↗Carry Nepalese rupees in small notes: many stalls, taxis and tea shops are cash-only, and shops rarely take foreign notes.
  • Nepal ↗Strikes (bandh) and protests can close roads without notice: check the news and your hotel the night before any airport or highway day.

Lumbini is the UNESCO-listed birthplace of the Buddha and a working pilgrimage site, not a sightseeing town. The Sacred Garden, the Ashokan Pillar and the Maya Devi Temple sit in one compact zone; the monasteries built by Buddhist countries spread over a 3 km canal-lined strip that you cover by bicycle or rickshaw. Most travellers come for a single night between Kathmandu and the Indian border, or as a stop on the Buddhist circuit. There is little nightlife and few restaurants, so plan the day around daylight.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The site is flat and spread out: rent a bicycle (about Rs 100–200 a day, check) or take a cycle rickshaw between the Sacred Garden and the monasteries. Walking the full canal strip both ways is 6–8 km in the heat. Shared jeeps and buses link the main gate with Siddharthanagar; the last return bus leaves around 17:00, so do not plan a late exit by public transport.

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Siddharthanagar (Bhairahawa)

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Bus or shared jeep from the main gate, about 30–40 min

Hotels, restaurants and the airport; useful if Lumbini beds are full.

Kapilvastu (Tilaurakot)

go

Door to door: 2–2.5 h

Taxi or bus via Taulihawa, about 1.5–2 h

Ruins of the Shakya capital; a half-day with a car and driver.

Butwal

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Bus or taxi on the Mahendra Highway, about 1 h

A transport hub, not a sight; use it to change buses.

Sauraha (Chitwan)

overnight

Door to door: 5–6 h

Bus via Bharatpur or Narayanghat, about 4–5 h

Too far for a day return; sleep there and continue.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Lumbini village and the main gate

Closest to the Sacred Garden; guesthouses, dhabas and bicycle rental. Best for a dawn start.

Monastic zone (Vishnupura Road)

Monastery guest rooms and pilgrim rest houses; quiet, cheap, curfews and house rules apply.

Siddharthanagar (Bhairahawa)

About 22 km away; mid-range hotels, restaurants and the airport. Use it if Lumbini beds are full or you have an early flight.

Watch out

Safety

Lumbini is calm and low-crime; the real risks are heat, unlit roads after dark, unlit bicycles and unagreed rickshaw or taxi fares. Solo women report few problems inside the site; take the usual care on night buses.
  • The last bus back toward Siddharthanagar leaves around 17:00; after that it is a taxi or an overnight.
  • Agree taxi and rickshaw fares before you get in.
  • Maya Devi Temple rules: shoes off, no photography of the marker stone, modest dress.
  • Monastery guest houses have fixed meal times and lights-out; no smoking, alcohol or music.
  • Summer heat and monsoon flooding are real: carry water and check road conditions in Jul–Sep.
