One night is enough: arrive early, walk the Sacred Garden and the monastic zone by bicycle, sleep in Lumbini or Siddharthanagar, leave next morning.
Lumbini is the UNESCO-listed birthplace of the Buddha and a working pilgrimage site, not a sightseeing town. The Sacred Garden, the Ashokan Pillar and the Maya Devi Temple sit in one compact zone; the monasteries built by Buddhist countries spread over a 3 km canal-lined strip that you cover by bicycle or rickshaw. Most travellers come for a single night between Kathmandu and the Indian border, or as a stop on the Buddhist circuit. There is little nightlife and few restaurants, so plan the day around daylight.

- Greeting: Namaste with palms together; a handshake between men in business; avoid: Hugging or kissing in public
- Temples and stupas: Walk clockwise, spin prayer wheels clockwise, shoes off at shrines; avoid: Touching offerings; entering Hindu-only areas
- Food: Right hand, accept refills gracefully; avoid: Sharing food you have bitten; stepping over food
- Feet and heads: Keep feet flat and away from people and altars; avoid: Touching anyone's head
- Photos: Ask first; offer to show the picture; avoid: Photographing cremations or rituals without permission

Scams and watch-outs
- The last bus back toward Siddharthanagar leaves around 17:00; after that it is a taxi or an overnight.
- Agree taxi and rickshaw fares before you get in.
- Maya Devi Temple rules: shoes off, no photography of the marker stone, modest dress.
- Monastery guest houses have fixed meal times and lights-out; no smoking, alcohol or music.
- Summer heat and monsoon flooding are real: carry water and check road conditions in Jul–Sep.
Lumbini is calm and low-crime; the real risks are heat, unlit roads after dark, unlit bicycles and unagreed rickshaw or taxi fares. Solo women report few problems inside the site; take the usual care on night buses.
