Nakuru is Kenya's fourth-largest city and the gateway to Lake Nakuru National Park, a fenced rhino sanctuary two hours from Nairobi on the A104. Most travellers use it as a one- or two-night stop between Nairobi and the western Rift Valley, not as a destination in its own right. The park, not the town, is the reason to come.

Getting around

Matatus and boda-bodas cover the centre cheaply; agree the fare before you board. Taxis and ride-hailing are the practical option after dark and for the park gate. The A104 highway through town carries heavy truck traffic — cross with care.

Watch out

Safety

One of Kenya's calmer mid-sized cities, but keep to normal urban rules: no walking alone after dark, phones out of sight at the matatu stages and market, and no leaving the vehicle in the park outside marked stops.
  • Do not leave your vehicle in the park except at marked viewpoints and picnic sites.
  • Baboons at Baboon Cliff and Makalia Falls grab food — keep windows closed.
  • Park roads turn muddy in the rains; a 4×4 is needed if self-driving.
  • Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled or filtered water.
  • Keep phones out of sight in matatus and around the market and bus stages.
