Temiskaming Shores

Come for 1–2 nights if you have a car and want lake views and quiet; without a car the bus links Haileybury and New Liskeard, but sights outside town are hard to reach.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Temiskaming Shores is the biggest community in this part of Northeastern Ontario, formed from Haileybury, New Liskeard and Dymond. It is a lake-and-highway stop, not a sightseeing city: the draws are Devil's Rock, the waterfronts and the Cobalt silver-rush history nearby. One to two nights covers it; a car is best for the sights outside town, though Temiskaming Transit links the two main towns.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

A car is the practical answer: Haileybury and New Liskeard are about 8 km apart and taxis add up fast. Temiskaming Transit links the two roughly 6:00–23:00, hourly on weekdays and every 2 hours at weekends, with no service on holidays; fare about $3.75 adult, $3.50 student or senior 55+, free for children (check current fares). Highway 11 is the main north–south route, Highway 65 runs west toward the Quebec border.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

New Liskeard waterfront

Hotels and motels on or near the lake, plus the Riverside Farmers' Market and the arena; the most convenient base if you want dinner close by.

Haileybury

Beach, marina, heritage museum and the old Millionaire's Row houses on Lakeshore Road; quieter, about 8 km from New Liskeard.

Highway 11 / Dymond

Motels and truck-stop food on the highway; practical for one night passing through, no walkable centre.

Watch out

Safety

A small, low-crime northern city; the real risks are winter driving on Highway 11, patchy Rogers coverage, and long unlit stretches between the three towns after dark.
  • Rogers cell coverage is patchy, especially in Haileybury; Bell/NorthernTel and Telus are more reliable.
  • No airport shuttle from North Bay, Rouyn-Noranda or Sudbury: arrange a car or the Ontario Northland bus.
  • The Peter Grant Mansion is private property and unfinished — do not treat it as a sight.
  • Seasonal businesses and attractions around Cobalt and on the lake close outside summer; call ahead.
  • Winter driving on Highway 11 can be icy and snow-covered; check conditions before a night arrival.

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for YXR, YYB, YUY and YSB: last bus and taxi fallbacks, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: New Liskeard waterfront, Haileybury beach and marina, Dymond highway strip, Cobalt day trip.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Devil's Rock, Haileybury Heritage Museum, Haileybury Beach) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Seasonal and hostile arrival fixtures (winter Highway 11 closures, holiday transit shutdown) so gates A–D can go green.
