Gothenburg is Sweden's second city and its west-coast port, built on Dutch-style canals at the mouth of the Göta älv. It pairs a walkable centre (Haga, Vasastan, the fish market) with a car-free island archipelago reachable on the same tram ticket. Two nights covers the city and one island; three lets you add Liseberg or a Bohuslän day. It is rainier and milder than Stockholm, and cheaper than the capital.

Getting around

Västtrafik runs trams, buses and ferries; the tram network is the largest light rail system in Scandinavia and covers the centre well. Tap a contactless card for a single ticket in zone A, or buy a 24 h or 72 h ticket. Trams to the southern archipelago (Saltholmen) and the island ferries are inside the same zone. The centre is flat and walkable; taxis are expensive.

Safety

Gothenburg is a safe, calm city by day and night; the real risks are wet, slippery cobbles, tram tracks underfoot, and pickpockets around Nordstan and the central station at busy times.
  • Ticket checks are real: riding without a valid ticket carries a 1,500 (≈ US$160) kr penalty fee.
  • Rain is frequent year-round on the west coast; pack a shell rather than an umbrella.
  • Parking is scarce and paid in most zones, and a congestion charge applies to the central area.
  • Late June to July many locals leave and some restaurants close for summer.
