Uddevalla is a west-coast town of about 35,000 people on the Byfjorden, 1 h 15 min by train from Gothenburg and on the E6 between Gothenburg and Oslo. It burned repeatedly in the 18th and 19th centuries, so the centre is mostly early-1900s, and the sights sit either side of the water: Bohusläns museum and the tourist office at the harbour, the boardwalk and Gustafsberg to the south-west. It works as a single night or a half-day break on a Bohuslän drive, not as a multi-day base.

Getting around

Västtrafik runs the local buses; the centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. In summer a boat line runs through the fjord from the harbour with several stops. Taxis are few — book ahead rather than flag one down.

Low-risk town; the practical issues are winter ice on pavements, dark early afternoons from November, and thin late-night transport — book a taxi rather than walk the E6 verges.
  • Use Uddevalla centralstation, not Uddevalla östra, when arriving by train from Gothenburg.
  • Express buses stop at Torp, 7 km west of the centre — budget a taxi or local bus into town.
  • The shell bank museum at Kuröd opens Jun–Aug only.
