Varberg is a small west-coast town 70 km south of Gothenburg, built around a coastal fortress and a long sand beach. The centre is walkable in an hour; the fortress, the cold-bath house and the surf beach at Apelviken fill a day. Grimeton radio station, a UNESCO site, is 10 km east and needs its own trip. Most travellers pass through by train; one night is enough, two if the weather is good.

Getting around

The centre is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Hallandstrafiken runs a small local bus network with departures at least every 30 minutes from morning to early evening. Bikes are the best way to reach Apelviken and Getterön; several signed cycle paths pass through town. A car helps only for Grimeton and the outlying beaches.

Safety

Varberg is a low-crime small town; the real risks are cold water and strong currents at the beaches, and dark cycle paths after a night out. Emergency number 112.
  • Öresundståg tickets are not sold on board: buy at the station machines or in the app before you board.
  • Many beach restaurants and ice-cream places open only April–September; check before you walk out to Apelviken in winter.
  • Sea temperatures stay cold even in August; the Kallbadhuset is a cold-bath house by design.
  • Summer weekends fill the campsites and spa hotels: book beds in advance.
