Halmstad is a west-coast town of about 106,000 people, on the E6 and the Öresundståg line between Gothenburg and Malmö, closer to Gothenburg. It fills up in July and August for the 7 km beach at Tylösand, the outdoor bars, and 12 golf courses. Off-season it is quiet, cheap and mostly a one-night stop.

Getting around

The centre is walkable; Hallandstrafiken buses run from Österskans bus station to Tylösand and around town. Regional trains (Öresundståg, SJ) link Gothenburg, Malmö and Copenhagen. A car helps for golf courses and out-of-town beaches.

Watch out

Safety

Halmstad is a calm, low-crime town; the real issues are summer crowds and parking at Tylösand, icy pavements in winter, and drinking on a night out. Standard precautions apply.
  • July and August are peak: Tylösand parking and beach get very crowded, and hotel prices jump.
  • Many outdoor bars and beach restaurants are seasonal and shut outside summer.
  • Sweden is card-first; some places no longer take cash.
  • Winter daylight is short and pavements can be icy.
