New AlbanyNew Albany, Indiana

Give New Albany one night, not three: a walkable downtown of Victorian blocks and breweries, 15 minutes from Louisville across the river.

New Albany is a small Ohio River city of about 36,000 people, founded in 1813 and the seat of Floyd County. Its draw is a compact historic downtown — Mansion Row, the Culbertson Mansion, independent restaurants and breweries — plus easy access to Louisville, Kentucky, 15 minutes away by car over the Sherman Minter or Kennedy bridge. It is a base or a half-day, not a destination in itself.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical default: downtown streets are walkable, but the airport, the interstate hotels and the surrounding county are not. Downtown is laid out on east–west streets (Main, Market, Spring, Elm, Oak) crossed by north–south streets (State, Pearl, Bank, Third and up). I-64 serves downtown at Spring Street; I-265 runs along the north side with exits at State Street, Grant Line Road and Charlestown Road. Louisville is a short drive across the river.

Old state capital with a small historic core; half a day.

A full day out; river town with a long main street.

Better as an overnight than a return day.

Architecture-focused town; check building tour times before you go.

Seymour, Indiana

Small; only worth it with a specific reason.

Bedford, Indiana

caution

Door to door: About 1 h 30 min

Limestone country; a long half-day.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / East Main Street

Walk to Mansion Row, restaurants and the riverfront; the pick if you want to leave the car parked.

West Spring Street (I-64 Exit 123)

Chain hotels by the interstate; cheaper and easier for a one-night stop, 5–10 min drive from downtown.

Floyds Knobs and Georgetown

Suburban and rural options north and west of town; only worth it if you have a car and a reason to be out there.

Watch out

Safety

New Albany is a normal small US city: violent crime is rare in the tourist downtown, and the practical risks are car break-ins, dark unlit riverfront paths at night and cross-river traffic. Lock the car, keep to lit streets after dark, and use 911 for emergencies.
  • Cross-river traffic backs up at peak times and during Louisville events; add 20–30 minutes if you are crossing for a flight or a show.
  • Downtown is quiet after about 21:00 on weeknights; plan dinner early or drive to Louisville.
  • Summer heat and humidity are real in July and August; do the walking blocks in the morning.
  • Some businesses still print seven-digit phone numbers; dial 812 (or 930) first.
