How to get to Qatar: airports, flights and border crossings

Book a flight to Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha. It is the country's only major international gateway and sits about 15 minutes from the city centre by metro or taxi. Direct flights run from most of Europe, the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, and a growing list of North American and Australian cities.

If you are already in the Gulf, you can also drive in from Saudi Arabia via the Abu Samra border crossing. There is no scheduled passenger ferry into Qatar, so sea arrival means a cruise ship call, not a booked crossing.

Hamad International Airport (DOH) handles essentially all scheduled passenger traffic. It is a large, modern hub and the base for Qatar Airways, which means strong one-stop connections from cities that lack a direct flight. The airport has its own metro station on the Red Line, so you can reach central Doha without a taxi.

Flight times depend on where you start. From London, expect roughly 6.5 to 7 hours direct. From New York, about 12 to 13 hours. From Sydney, about 14 to 15 hours. From most of Europe, the Middle East and South Asia, direct flights are common; from smaller cities you will usually connect through a Gulf or European hub.

Qatar shares its only land border with Saudi Arabia, at the Abu Samra crossing in the south. You can cross by private car or by bus. If you drive, you need your own vehicle paperwork, insurance valid for Qatar, and a licence that is accepted locally — an international driving permit plus your home licence is the usual combination (check).

The crossing is straightforward in normal conditions but can be slow at peak times such as holidays. There is no rail link into Qatar, so land entry means road. If you are coming from the UAE, you will cross Saudi Arabia first, which has its own visa and vehicle rules.

There is no scheduled passenger ferry service to Qatar. Cruise ships call at Doha port during the winter season, and passengers usually get a day in the city. If you want to arrive by water, a cruise call is the realistic option; check the cruise line's schedule and shore-excursion rules rather than looking for a ferry timetable.

Visa rules depend on your passport. Many nationalities receive a free visa on arrival or travel under a visa waiver, but the list changes, so confirm your own case before booking. Your passport should have at least six months' validity and blank pages.

Check the current rules on the official Qatar government portal, and check airline requirements too, since airlines enforce document rules at check-in. If you are connecting through Qatar without leaving the airport, transit rules are different from entry rules.

Doha's metro and taxis make the airport-to-hotel leg easy, and the city is compact enough that a 2–4 night stopover covers the main sights. If you are arriving on a long-haul flight, build in time for the heat: outdoor plans are best from October to April.

Sort out money, a local SIM or eSIM, and travel insurance before you fly. The riyal is pegged at about 3.64 to the US dollar, cards are widely accepted, and the airport and malls have exchange counters.
